There is no consensus in the literature regarding the exact duration and
frequency of rest breaks for a computer operator. What is agreed, however, is
that rest breaks:
- Increase productivity
- Reduce loss of performance and work accuracy that occurs with fatigue
- If combined with stretching exercises can reduce postural stress and prevent OOS (Ocupational Overuse Syndrome)
The P@WS Exercise Reminder includes the following features:
- Nonintrusive and easy to follow
- Encourages users to pause and perform simple stretching exercises every half hour
- Randomly selects from a database of exercises
- The option to choose exercises specific to the areas of the body that the user may be experiencing postural fatigue or tension
By reminding and clearly demonstrating exercises to the user, chances of
compliance are significantly enhanced. This is consistent with findings from my
Masters thesis (Spetch L A & Kolt G S 2001 Adherence to Sport Injury
Rehabilitation. Physical Therapy in Sport 2(2): 80-90)
